[H-GEN] dd and disk images

i have been playing around with dd, to make disk images for backup purposes.
I have used the syntax  dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/hda1.image
I notice that dd has a number of options relating to converting and blocks.
Do I need any of these options to create an image that can successfully be
restored ??

i don't really have the facilities to 'test' the image, not without
overwriting the original.
So before I burn it to cdrom, I was hopeing to find out if what I have done
will work.
