Ok,
Paul managed to do a low level format of the Sparc HDD. This at first
seemed to fix the problem I was having with fdisk during the install....
BUT
1. Tried to do a print of the partition table and got a bus error
reported.. fdisk bombs
2. Put fdisk into "expert" (yeah, i know, i'm no expert, but it seemed like
a good idea) and did a dump of the first sector of the disk, which seemed
to work. Looked like complete gibberish to me, but didn't crash fdisk.
3. Went back to work.
Never got time today to look at it again. We did note however that fdisk
said the disk had 7 heads, 1023 cylinders and 58 sectors per track, whereas
the maxtor site (http://www.maxtor.com/ftp/pub/scsi/lxt-213s.txt) says this
about the device in question (a LXT-213SY)....
FUNCTIONAL:
* Data zones.................... 6
* Bit density (Kbpi)............ 27-29
* Track density (tpi)........... 1,591
* Disks......................... 4
* Data heads.................... 7
* Servo heads................... 1
* Physical tracks............... 9,240
* Sectors per track............. 34-56
* Physical cylinders............ 1,320
Which doesn't quite gel. I will be the first to admit I really have no
clue about this stuff, perhaps someone could point out the error of my ways
for me ??
TIA
