Something I discovered a few days ago:

I was running a statically linked SCO COFF executable using ibcs.  The
version was the 12 Feb '97 version (debian version 970212-2).  I upgraded
to 971113-3 and everything broke - it died at a similar point to yours.  I
downgraded and all is happy once more.  I'm running a 2.0.27 kernel.

So I'd suggest trying an older version to see if that works.
