Remove (or rename) the link in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d.
On Red Hat 4.1 it is called /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S72amd.
It should be a link from /etc/rc.d/init.d/amd.
Or you can use the runlevel editor (tksysv as root).
