I think i've worked it out, i already had the line
append="ether=0x220,9,eth0 ether=0x300,10,eth1"
in my lilo.conf file, both boards were set to Jumperless mode with
the dos utility that came with the cards, no PnP in a 386...
A quick re-compile of the kernel should make it work a bit better.
