Hi,

The configuration could be that the modem is not holding LAPM/v42 mode, try
doing a AT&F first rather than ATZ then add a /N4 or equivalent string to
force v42 also add a fallback/fallforward command so the modem can retrain
if line quality goes bad.

If that fails then your pppd is broken ;)
