I am not entirely sure; but, I believe that the `intellimouse' is not
a Microsoft protocol mouse.  I think that M$ has done their usual
trick and changed the `standard'.  Note that the mouse is ``serial
compatible'' and not ``Microsoft compatible'' --- this refers to its
conformity with the RS232 standard.

My short answer - X needs to specifically support the `intellimouse'.
