The free version has a few limitations, such as time limits (40 minutes
from memory), number of participants and lack of distance to a communal
curry joint.  That said, LA would probably lend us their subscription
which doesn't suffer from 2 out of 3 of those.

As you say everybody does it, and I do it far too much.  It's 
definitely better than not meeting at all, but a distinct second best
to actually hanging out in the same room as a group of friends.  There
is nothing preventing those meeting in person who want to, and the rest
joining over zoom.
